alb3634722 The Fishing Boat. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 25 1/2 x 32 in. (64.8 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1865.Courbet painted this work during an intensely productive visit to Trouville with James McNeill Whistler from September until November 1865; in a letter to his father, the artist boasted that he had executed "thirty-five paintings" in a very short time, which "stunned everybody." In his choice of subject, Courbet followed in the wake of Eugène Isabey, Johan Barthold Jongkind, and Eugène Boudin; but unlike many of the canvases executed at the time, this fishing boat, rigged and filled with equipment, is the focus of the composition rather than a subordinate element. In 1899, this became the first work by Courbet to enter the Museum's collection. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3676590 The Manneporte near Étretat. Artist: Claude Monet (French, Paris 1840-1926 Giverny). Dimensions: 32 x 25 3/4 in. (81.3 x 65.4 cm). Date: 1886.In 1886, the writer Guy de Maupassant published his eyewitness account of Monet at Étretat. "The artist walked along the beach, followed by children carrying five or six canvases representing the same subject at different times of the day and with different effects. He took them up and put them aside by turns according to changes in the sky and shadows." Monet painted the dramatically arched projection in the cliff at Étretat six times from this angle: twice during each of three visits to the Normandy coast in 1883, 1885, and 1886. He refined the pictures in his studio. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3627817 Entrance to a Dutch Port. Artist: Willem van de Velde II (Dutch, Leiden 1633-1707 London). Dimensions: 25 7/8 x 30 5/8 in. (65.7 x 77.8 cm). Date: ca. 1665.In 1672 the artist and his father, Willem van de Velde the Elder, moved from Amsterdam to England, where they were awarded pensions from Charles II and the duke of York. This picture dates from the early Dutch period, about 1665, but it is already remarkably mature in its balance between meticulous draftsmanship and broad effects of daylight and atmosphere. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: WILLEM VAN DE VELDE II.

alb3620609 The Calm Sea. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 28 3/4 in. (59.7 x 73 cm). Date: 1869.Courbet painted this view looking out over the English Channel during a visit to Étretat along the coast of Normandy in August 1869. The ocean has receded at low tide, and two small boats are left on the shore. The tranquil composition, with its immense sky towering over narrow bands of water and sand, is unusual for Courbet's marine paintings of this period, dominated by dramatically crashing waves. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3608851 The Trojan Women Setting Fire to Their Fleet. Artist: Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée) (French, Chamagne 1604/5?-1682 Rome). Dimensions: 41 3/8 x 59 7/8 in. (105.1 x 152.1 cm). Date: ca. 1643.The Trojan women set fire to their ships in an effort to end years of wandering after the fall of Troy. The clouds and rain in the distance presage the storm sent by Jupiter at Aeneas's request to quench the blaze. Claude noted in his Liber Veritatis that the picture was painted in Rome for Girolamo Farnese. The learned prelate, who returned to the city in 1643, must have chosen this episode from Virgil's Aeneid (V:604-95) to allude to his years of itinerant service as papal nuncio combating Calvinism in remote Alpine cantons of the Swiss Confederation. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3652852 The Collector of Prints. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 20 7/8 x 15 3/4 in. (53 x 40 cm). Date: 1866.In this scene, cheap, outmoded prints--colored lithographs by the flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté--are coupled with a fashionable Tang dynasty horse and Japanese fabrics pinned on the bulletin board to typify an old-fashioned collector, obsessively accumulating an array of artworks. The depiction of individuals, interrupted at tasks amid settings that reveal clues about their character, was developed by Degas in numerous figure paintings of the 1860s and early 1870s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3655202 Kynance. Artist: John Brett (British, Bletchingly 1831-1902 London). Dimensions: 7 x 14 1/8 in. (17.8 x 35.9 cm). Date: 1888.Brett was influenced by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites and the writings of John Ruskin. He specialized in views of sea and sky and coastal subjects, and was known for detailed, accurate depictions of the natural world such as this one. Kynance Cove lies north and west of Lizard Head, the furthest southwest point in Cornwall. Brett, a yachtsman, doubtless reached Kynance by sea, as in the 1870s and 1880s he spent his summers sailing the coast. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3661078 The Sea. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61 cm). Date: 1865 or later.During successive sojourns at Trouville in the mid-1860s, Courbet fully developed the pictorial vocabulary that he used for his distinctive minimalist views of the sea and sky under different conditions of light and weather. This "sea landscape" (paysage de mer), as he called such works, may have been painted along the Normandy coast between 1865 and 1867, or it may be a later studio repetition.
